In March 2024, The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) and the Indonesian Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries jointly released the "2019-2024 Indonesian Fisheries Overview". This article provides an overall overview of the development of Indonesia's fisheries industry from 2019 to 2024, including information on aquaculture and fishing practices, Indonesian seafood exports, and the potential for Indonesian seafood exports.
The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) was established in 1967 and operates through a secretariat located in Thailand. In 2017, the SEAFDEC Council Special Meeting approved SEAFDEC's mission to "promote and drive member states to take concerted action to ensure the sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture in Southeast Asia". SEAFDEC consists of 11 member countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Indonesia (hereinafter referred to as Indonesia) is an archipelagic country with 17504 islands and a total area of 192000 square kilometers. It is located between the Pacific and Indian Oceans, with a total coastline of 95181 kilometers and an exclusive economic zone of 2.91 million square kilometers.
In fact, Indonesia's marine and inland fishing and aquaculture industries are crucial to its economy and food security. In 2023, the fishing industry contributed 2.78% of Indonesia's GDP, with a per capita consumption of 50 kilograms of aquatic products.
Indonesia is one of the world's major exporters of aquatic products. According to FAO data, Indonesia's seafood catch in 2022 was approximately 7.4 million tons, making it the world's second largest seafood producer and second only to China in global seafood production (see figure below for specific data). In recent years, the export volume of Indonesian seafood has increased from 1.125 million tons in 2018 to 1.221 million tons in 2023, indicating an increasing demand for Indonesian seafood in the international market year by year.
