The opening ceremony of the 2024
processing season of the China-Malta
Bluefin Tuna Joint Venture Platform
Recently, two "150 kg" Maltese bluefin tuna landed at Shanghai Pudong International Airport on a flight. After the customs food quarantine experts of Shanghai Pudong International Airport carried out the port quarantine procedures, the tuna was successfully taken away from the airport port and transported to the domestic destination on the same day. This is the first time that Maltese bluefin tuna has been imported in the form of "general trade" after completing its "first show" at the 6th China International Import Expo and officially obtaining access to China. The transformation from "exhibit" to "commodity" means that Maltese bluefin tuna has officially entered the Chinese consumer market.
"The bluefin tuna produced in Malta is allowed to enter the domestic market, which has broadened our procurement channels and provided more options for domestic consumers." Wang Dong, general manager of Shanghai Yiwangxian Supply Chain Co., Ltd. said that since the beginning of this year, the company has imported more than 800 bluefin tuna from major production areas around the world, with a value of more than 2 million euros.
On October 4, Peng Yijun, Charge d'Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Malta, and Malta's Prime Minister Abela attended the ceremony to celebrate the opening of the 2024 processing season of the first China-Malta bluefin tuna joint venture platform and delivered speeches. Malta's Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Rifaro, heads of fishery groups from both countries, and guests from the Maltese business community attended the ceremony.
