Prices plummeted! The price ranges from more than 1,000 yuan to 20 yuan per catty. Some people have made millions a year by relying on it.
In the 1980s and 1990s, the giant salamander was listed as a national second-level protected animal due to excessive poaching, river pollution, and damage to the ecological environment. As China's artificial breeding technology matures, artificially cultured salamanders have begun to enter the market. Due to high prices and considerable profits, a large amount of capital has poured into the cultured salamander market.
However, starting around 2013, the price of farmed salamander has been falling. It once sold for more than 1,000 yuan per catty, but now the wholesale price has dropped to as low as about 20 yuan per catty. Farmers have successively reduced production, quit or transformed.
