According to the Beijing Business Daily, citing news from Japan's Kyodo News Agency, China has de facto stopped importing ornamental koi from Japan starting in November 2023.
It is understood that the incident was caused by Chinese regulations that Japanese koi must undergo quarantine at designated facilities before being exported to China. But recently, the quarantine license of the facility expired at the end of October this year, and China did not extend the license period of the designated quarantine facility. Sources revealed that Japan has asked China through diplomatic channels about the suspension of imports of koi, but China has not responded directly. Some analysts said that this incident may be a decision made by China influenced by Japan's plan to discharge nuclear contaminated water into the sea.
