Against the backdrop of continuous reduction in fish catches in the surrounding waters of Japan due to factors such as climate change, the scale of "land-based aquaculture" using large land ponds to raise salmon and other aquatic products is constantly expanding. With the successive promotion of related facility construction plans, the production almost doubled in the four years from 2019 to 2023. What is particularly noteworthy is that multiple industries across Japan, including non coastal prefectures, are competing to enter this field.

The "land-based aquaculture" of artificially cultivating aquatic products on land rather than in the ocean has entered a large-scale commercialization stage in Japan. Salmon sold by Japanese trading company Marubeni was available in domestic stores in Japan in October.

The land-based farmed salmon can not only meet the domestic market demand, but also may become a new growth point of Japanese aquaculture.
